2016 Annexus Mataro

97 pts "The inaugural release, open-fermented and matured in French hogsheads (25% new) for 12 months. It's a fool's errand to nominate a drink-to date for this wine! Mataro is a notable age-worthy variety, and one made from low yielding 100+yo vines by a red wine master maker who held responsibility for making Grange for many years. The colour is beautiful, a deep, vibrant crimson, the bouquet complex and rich, the palate with layer upon layer of mainly black fruits that keep their feet on the throat of any tannins trying to make centre stage."James Halliday Wine Companion 1 February 2018

93 pts "Duval's first release of a straight Mataro, this is sourced from 115-year-old dry-grown vines in Light Pass. The 2016 Annexus Mataro is a jaw-dropper, packed with mulberry and black cherry fruit. It's garnished with hints of oaky spice and vanilla from aging in 20% new French oak puncheons, but the compelling fruit stays front and center. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, it ends with a flourish of velvety tannins." Joe Czerwinski Wine Advocate September 2018

92 pts "Interesting wine. Dry, meaty, dark and berried, but leathery. So much to like, so much to ponder. There’s a gaminess to this, a drying aspect, a floral dimension too. Young mataro often has me wondering: is it brett or is it just varietal character? It’s a distracting thought, regardless of the answer. Though it has to be said: the form here, the weight, the breadth of flavour – it’s not a hard wine to appreciate." Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front July 2018

4 1/2 Stars "The nose is very appealing, showing floral notes and varietal earthiness. The palate is supple and delicious, balanced by very fine, savoury tannins. Irresistable." Lester Jesberg Wine Wise June 2018
