John Duval Wine - Review by James HallidayAWARDS + REVIEWS

Plexus MRV Overview and philosophy.

2017 Plexus Marsanne Roussanne Viognier

92+ pts "Bright and sunny in part; textural and smoky in other; long and satisfying to close. The grapes have been picked at perfect ripeness, the oak deftly matched, the general juicy flow of it set just so. We’re in excellent territory, and hands, here. It should mature well into the medium term too." Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front July 2018

2016 Plexus Marsanne Roussanne Viognier

94 pts "Exotic and complex with notes of fresh lemon, roasted nuts, lanolin, lime zest and subtle oak. The palate is beautifully poised, with interlocking layers of classy fruit and savoury tones. Perfect expression and composure. It is a satisfying high-quality wine that is an absolute steal at this price. Enjoy now or age in the short term for further complexity." Toni Patterson MW The Real Review November 2017

94 pts "I'd really love to taste this wine in 3-5 years time. It's pleasant now, its balance and freshness admirable, but it's the potential for flavour and complexity development that is eye - or mouth - catching. It's specific to this wine, the blend common enough, but often bland." James Halliday 2018 Halliday Wine Companion August 2017

93+ pts "Slender, direct, elegant and controlled. Indeed a far more elegant wine than this blend routinely produces. Built to age, you could also argue. Pebbly, spicy, stone-fruited and citrussy. Spice. Musk. A hint of reduction. Patience is required, but should be rewarded." Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front July 2017

2015 Plexus Marsanne Viognier Roussanne

93 pts "It needs a little extra time to flesh out but this looks the goods. Will be interesting to follow its development. There's some tartness for now but there's also pulpy nectarine and melon, with green apple, chalk and spice notes aplenty. Interesting, dry textural style. Wait 6-12 months." Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front June 2016

89 pts "The 2015 Plexus Blanc has notes of apricots, poached pears and allspice with hints of honeysuckle and white pepper. Medium-bodied, there is a pleasant touch of oiliness to the texture with a great concentration of fruit, finishing with lingering anise and baking spice notes." Lisa Perrotti-Brown The Wine Advocate June 2016

2014 Plexus Marsanne Roussanne Viognier

94 pts “John Duval might be best known for his work with red grapes, but his Rhone-inspired white blend is no slouch. It’s lighter and fresher, finer than expected, but still delivers elements of each variety in the mesh. There’s a slickness to the texture, spice nuance and a ripe, fresh stone-fruit profile in the mix. Wonderful balance too.” Mike Bennie Australia's Wine Business Magazine 2015

Top Rated Wines “Aromas of stone fruits, honeysuckle and dried apricot lead to a medium-bodied palate with good texture, balanced acidity and a dry finish. A vibrant blend of marsanne, roussanne and viognier with nectarine, mandarin and pear flavours.” Peter Bourne Gourmet Traveller Wine Dec 2015

92+ pts “The 2014 Plexus Blanc reveals pronounced notes of warm peaches, baking bread, honeyed pears and baking spices. Medium-bodied, it is wonderfully fresh in the mouth with a satiny texture and great persistence." Lisa Perrotti-Brown The Wine Advocate October 2016

3.5/5 Stars “The Rhone white varieties usually produce wines of richness and substance, and this one certainly fits that description. Peach and apricot characteristics show on both nose and palate, and the latter has significant grip to balance the rush of flavour…” Lester Jesberg June 2015

2013 Plexus Marsanne Roussanne Viognier

92/100 “An exotic blend from one of South Australia’s most accomplished winemakers.  No one variety dominates a rich, dry, complex wine.  Musky florals, peach, apricot and ginger aromas meet the nose, there’s a whisper of oak and it tastes lush, dry and complete.” Ralph Kyte-Powell The Age Epicure Wine Guide July 2014

Highly Recommended “The apricot and honeysuckle aromas are almost understated and the freshness is impressive.  The dry, structured palate is very satisfying and long.” Lester Jesberg Winewise Championship Bulletin May 2014

Tony Love’s Top 100 Wines “Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier often form three-way blends, here with delicate white stone fruits and a note of apricot, the fragrance attractive, then an almost secret power and intensity as it settles, vital, complex and fulfilling.” Tony Love  The Advertiser Taste - Top 100 Wines July 2014

91 pts “Light yellow.  Ripe orchard and pit fruits on the deeply perfumed, spice-tinged nose and in the mouth.  Round and fleshy yet lively, with slow-building spiciness and a touch of honeysuckle.  The spicy quality repeats strongly on the finish, which leaves notes of peach pit and lemon curd behind.  The richest rendition of this bottling to date, but not at all lacking for vivacity.” Josh Raynolds  Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar August 2014

91 pts “Bright, light yellow colour and a fresh, clean bouquet of fresh herbs and creamy yeast lees, and subtly nutty characters, accompanied by very attractive texture on the palate. It also has a slight saline quality. The finish is dry and long and quite saline. Good drinking. Huon Hooke www.huonhooke.com September 2014

94 pts “50% finished fermentation in French Oak (10% new), matured in oak for 6 months, the remainder aged in tank on yeast lees. The abundant texture and structure are remarkable until one remembers John Duval’s long career at Penfolds, with responsibility for Grange.” James Halliday Wine Companion 2016

89 pts “A blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, the 2013 Plexus Blanc offers notes of peaches, spiced pears and apple tart with an undercurrent of baker’s yeast and fresh hay. Dry medium-bodied and with plenty of freshness, it fills the initial palate with toast and apple-laced flavors and finishes with good persistence.” Lisa Perrotti-Brown Wine Advocate June 2015

2012 Plexus Marsanne Roussanne Viognier

"Roussanne, viognier and another Rhone original, Marsanne often form a three-way blend as in the John Duval Wines 2012 Plexus, which has a great sense of cohesion, the fragrance attractive yet not overpowering, the palate fresh, vital and complex - stylish and fulfilling." Tony Love SA Weekend Magazine - The Advertiser - February 2014

92 pts "A three-way 'Rhone' white blend from the Barossa Valley, Plexus has appetising pear, apple, patisserie and heathland marsanne-roussanne aromas along with a dab of spicy oak." Ralph Kyte-Powell The  Age - Epicure Wine Guide

93 pts "Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier swim among each other in this surprisingly taut, finely meshed white wine. Minerality in stone and slate, the phenolics of powdery apples and perfume set to floral - it's a compelling rendition of the Rhone trio." Mike Bennie WBM September 2013

92 pts "Intensely perfumed nose offers fresh and dried pit fruits, jasmine and floral honey.  Bright minerality adds lift and cut to the ripe orchard and pit fruit flavors, which are given a refreshingly bitter edge by a note of lime zest, Gains flesh with air and finished with pliant, very persistent orange and nectarine flavors. An appealing blend of richness and nerve." Josh Raynolds - The International Wine Cellar - July 2013

90 pts "Exotic and highly perfumed bouquet of grapefruit, apricot, honeysuckle and lanolin; the palate is medium-bodied fleshy and generous, with fine acid bringing the finish to a long and vibrant conclusion." James Halliday - The Wine Companion July 2013.

90+ pts "Very pretty nose of acacia honey, jasmine and orange blossoms over a core of fresh pears, golden delicious apples and nectarines.  Medium-bodied with a nice hint of phenolic texture and real elegance to the fruit expression, it finishes long and a little spicy." Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parkers The Wine Advocate March 2013

2011 Plexus Marsanne Roussanne Viognier

91 pts "From the man who used to make Penfolds Grange, John Duval shows he can turn his green fingers to high-class whites too with this intensely flavoured Southern Rhône'esque blend that's full of floral, peach and nutty almond flavours, all the while retaining a lovely clarity of fruit and subtle nutty dry aftertaste. Bunches of Fives – Something completely different." The Wine Gang October Newsletter October 2013

94pts "A surprise for restraint and detail - a gentle nutty vein with soft, chalky phenolics gives textural complexity and nuance.  Fine, frisky and linear with bright citrus and appley residual flavour, this is an excellent expression of Rhone varieties enmeshed." Mike Bennie WBM Magazine December 2012 / January 2013

91 pts "Bright straw. Lemongrass, nectarine and anise on the pungent, subtly honeyed nose.  Taut and linear on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering intense pit fruit and citrus pith flavours. Closes with firm bite and very good focus and spicy persistence.  This wine improves a lot with aeration. Josh Raynolds The international Wine Cellar July 2012

2010 Plexus Marsanne Roussanne Viognier

92 pts “Pale gold. Heady, expressive scents of dried citrus fruits, mango, poached pear and honey, along with a smoky quality and a hint of tarragon. Bright and lively but also dense, offering pungent lemon and orange rind, pear and honey flavors. Finishes smooth, broad and long, with very good clarity and spicy persistence. This has the heft to handle richer foods but it's not carrying any excess weight.”
Josh Raynolds, Steven Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar – New York July 2011

91 pts “This very first vintage of 2010 Plexus Blanc is a blend of 62% Marsanne, 26% Roussanne and 13% Viognier. It has a pretty honey suckle and orange blossom scented nose with peaches, poached pears and a suggestion of white pepper. The medium to full-bodied palate has wonderfully pure stone fruit and fennel seeds flavors with medium-high acid and nice silky texture going long into the finish. It’s drinking beautifully now and should have some capacity to develop a honeyed / toasty character over the next 4-6 years.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Robert Parkers, The Wine Advocate – December 2010
